Anancy Festival, 2012, Kingston, Jamaica
Wow, what fun I had at the Jamaica 50, 2012 Anancy Festival in Kingston. I created a bilingual retelling of the Anancy tale, "Anancy and Bredda Tiger" incorporating song. I brought my guitar and a multitude of percussion instruments, including drums, shakers, bells, tamborines, catta sticks (and frogs - wooden ones!) I read the story in Patois, with the song, encouraging everyone to sing along, which, to my delight, they did. Then I retold the tale in English, recruiting willing volunteers from the audience to play the cadre of musical instruments. And we repeated the story until everyone had had a turn at being musician. What a joyous cacophany of celebration and community! I cannot wait until next year. Hear are some pictures for the event:

I had this wild hair to do a recital of sorts, "An Evening Of Song!" spanning music of genres from opera to jazz, musical theater and my own unclassified, acoustic creations, and Denny Davis, (music lecturer of Bethlehem Moravian College, St. Elizabeth,) agreed to play with me and we turned it into a fundraiser for abused women in St. Elizabeth. Eleven Paints, Five Paintbrushes, One Palettte, 31 Days in Treasure Beach
I "heard the cry of my Ancestors and followed Spirit home" to Jamaica, West Indies, the birth place of my parents. I picked up myself, my two sons, (15 and 13) and a few bags and leapt. It has been an exhilarating and immensely challenging experience but I find that as long as I have a creative outlet I can continue to breath on my own, and lesson the stress on me emotionally and physically. Interestingly enough, I honestly am in a peaceful place spiritually. In July 2011, I decided to paint a picture a day throughout the month. I had no set theme, I simply allowed myself to be present with myself in each moment and allow inspiration to come forth intuitively. In the end, I completed twenty wonderfully whimsical paintings.
